About the work
When the artist moved to Toride and learned that it was known as a bicycle city, he was struck by the idea. Yet hardly anyone seemed to be riding bicycles. Apparently, the city had once sought to flourish as a bicycle town because of its velodrome. Today, however, large numbers of bicycles in Toride are left abandoned and discarded. Through the artist’s practice, these bicycles are given new life. Each bicycle carries its own story—where it was bought, how it was used, where it traveled. By gathering fragments of the former owners’ memories, the artist asks whether it might be possible to breathe new life into bicycles whose time and history have come to a standstill.
